What you need to know about this report.

The current agricultural model was designed to meet the food needs of a growing population after the Second World War, but it is now running up against its own limits and, above all, those of the planet. The figures are critical and invite us to consider an alternative model. The agricultural sector is responsible for 23% of anthropogenic (human-related) greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions according to Polytechnique Insights, 35% of the world's soils are degraded, notably because of intensive farming practices, according to the FAO, and finally 30% of the world's population is food insecure according to the UN.

What levers can transform this exhausted model?

The circular economy, or resource economy, is one of the levers we examined throughout this report.

The circular economy can be defined as a virtuous economic model, inspired by nature, that aims to preserve natural resources and eliminate the very notion of waste. By placing resource sufficiency at the heart of the way it works, the circular economy enables responsible business models to emerge, creates new sustainable jobs and builds organisational resilience.

Continuing our commitment to supporting the transition of private and public actors towards a circular economy, we wanted to analyse how it can contribute in many ways to forms of agriculture that are more resilient and more respectful of living systems. This report therefore sets out to show how, by enabling better production, better consumption and better management of new lives, the circular economy helps move away from an extractive, linear logic (take - consume - dispose) towards a more regenerative one.
