Context

Context

Financial institutions have a key role to play in the circular transition, but they face several barriers: a lack of track record and of suitable tools to grasp the financial returns, and the specific risks of circular models being poorly assessed.

Year 1: diagnosis and recommendations (2024-2025)

Since September 2024, the coalition - bringing together BNP Paribas, La Banque Postale, Oney and Cofidis - has examined seven circular business models (long-term rental of household appliances, packaging reuse, repair and refurbishment, vehicle retrofitting, reuse of construction materials, bike rental, industrial symbiosis) to identify funding levers.

On 15 October 2025 this work led to the publication of the report "Financing the circular economy: barriers and opportunities", which identifies three areas for improvement: adapting finance to the deferred profitability of usage-based models, better anticipating the residual value of circular assets and revising risk assessment tools. Two priority use cases - long-term rental of household appliances and packaging reuse (deposit return) - were the subject of detailed operational recommendations (B2B2C models, usage-linked insurance, blended finance, leasing of collection and washing equipment, impact contracts).

Ongoing work

Now bringing together 5 of France's 6 largest banks and an energy company, the coalition aims to attract new players in order to source relevant circular economy projects for these institutions to finance, particularly in industrial and territorial ecology (ITE), reuse and material criticality.

Objective

To evolve financing and insurance mechanisms so that they can support the scaling up of circular business models.

FAQ

What you need to know about us.

What is Circul'R?

Circul'R is a consulting firm specializing in the circular economy. Since 2016, it has supported over 150 large companies and public entities through consulting projects, sector-specific coalitions, training programs, and the Circul'R Club.

How does Circul'R differ from a generalist CSR consultancy?

Unlike a generalist CSR consultancy, Circul'R has specialized exclusively in the circular economy since 2016. This cross-functional expertise—covering supply chains, regulations (AGEC, REP, ESPR), and business models—allows the firm to turn circularity into a measurable competitive advantage: impact reduction, resource security, compliance, and new growth drivers.

Who is Circul'R for?

Circul'R advises large private companies—including many CAC 40 and SBF 120 groups—on their strategic decisions across all sectors. The firm also supports organizations implementing public circular economy policies, such as eco-organizations, agencies, funding bodies, and local authorities.
